Cassandra O’ Donnell dishes out the perfect recipe for the most-watched Daytime Show in Ireland.

What is Ireland talking about? It’s the main question on Cassandra O’ Donnell’s mind every day as Series Producer on RTE’s Today show. With a crew of around 40 working on the show, Cassandra’s main bulk of work is with the three editorial teams: each comprised of 3 producers, 3 assistant producers and 3 researchers.

DSC_3798Each morning begins with a team meeting where the script is reviewed and it’s decided how best to make the components of the show come to life. This is one of the key elements of Cassandra’s role. The best guests might be on the couch, and the most topical issues might be discussed, but the live show must feel alive!

With 5 shows going out every week from the RTE studios in Cork, maintaining viewership and keeping the audience engaged is no easy feat. Cassandra explains that one of the main focusses of the Today show is a strong balance between freshness and familiarity.
Current affairs and topical issues dictate new engaging content and ensure that no show is ever the same; whereas each show has a definitive strand which allows audiences to know exactly what to expect: Monday’s focus is on money, with financial expert Liam Croke in studio; Tuesday shines a spotlight on free health advice and topical health issues; The Examiner’s Vickie May joins Maura and Dáithí on Wednesdays to discuss consumer issues; Psychologist Michael Murphy has a slot on Thursdays delving into psychological problems while Friday is all about that Friday feeling and a general focus on the good things in life!DSC_3859 These regular slots are of course interspersed with in-season cooking, fashion, beauty, gardening, topical issues, celebrity stories and light-hearted chat!

So, what is Ireland talking about? Grab a cuppa and cosy up on the couch with Maura and Dáithí Mondays-Friday from 4.10-5.30 to find out!
