Bachelor’s Quay – North Channel
This quay is a classic example of the old heart of the City. Long disused commercially it is set in a tranquil & picturesque part of the City and boasts some fine restored Mill buildings, Wrought iron bridges and Georgian/Victorian Townhouses. Many of the wealthier citizens of Cork in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries lived on Bachelor’s Quay. They built some fine Georgian houses along the quay.
The houses became tenements in the nineteenth century when the merchants and bankers left for the more fashionable suburbs of Blackrock and Montenotte further East towards the modern day Port. The Victorian Mercy Hospital (still in use) is here and there are some fine river views.
