Locations > Schull
Schull (pronounced ‘Skull’) is a very picturesque harbour village set in a sheltered port on the famous Roaring Water Bay, with the Mizen Head stretching out to the West and the Islands of Cape Clear, Heir and Sherkin in the distance protecting it from the worst ravages of the Atlantic. It is a quiet place mostly, except in Summer when it attracts a good number of Irish & foreign tourists and yachtsmen sailing down the coast. It is never too busy, however, and although the town is well geared for tourism, it retains its original and distinctive West Cork atmosphere with some fine old pubs, and rows of multi-coloured houses and shops. The harbour itself is pretty despite being a practical place where local fishermen land their seafood and small ferries run out to the Islands in Summer.
The surrounding countryside is rugged yet seductive and has attracted some well known media types to live here, such as the actor Jeremy Irons who owns a refurbished Castle Tower just outside the town.
It is a great place to film and to act as a base for reaching out to the Mizen Head and the Islands.
