Locations > Whitegate Power Station
This is the largest and most visually striking power station in the County and sits on a promontory at the entrance to the giant natural Harbour of Cork. Very distinctive with its red & white hooped chimney it is a landmark for those coming into the Harbour. It is actually a Gas fired station, despite being located right across from the Country’s biggest Oil Refinery!
Its main interest to film makers is as a backdrop for the harbour and a startling contrast to the small but pretty traditional village of Whitegate which is nearby.
Whitegate village used to be set in a picturesque, open bay but now finds itself bizarrely sandwiched between two huge Industrial monoliths – the Oil Refinery and the Power Station, and the juxtaposition of this is a poignant visual metaphor for progress.
